Meet the Interns: Chris Hung

We’ve had fun highlighting the new talent here at Octo, specifically this year’s summer interns. Alas, all good things must come to an end – but not before we feature Chris Hung, a George Mason University student studying computer engineering. Chris is anticipating graduation in 2023. Read more in this interview.

What’s a fun fact about you?

In 2018, I participated in a cybersecurity competition called Cyberpatriot. The competition was aimed at correcting network security and Cisco network challenges. Our Team made it to semi-finals.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation spot is Japan because they have unique castles and advanced technology. They also have complex bullet train systems and an artificial intelligence (AI) robot front desk at a hotel.

What are some of your professional interests?

I am currently interested in software development. I am developing server bots for an application called Discord to improve user experience. Discord is a VoIP and instant messaging social platform. Users can communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media, and files in private chats.

What drew you to an internship at Octo?

I was drawn to Octo because the company works with AI. I am excited to work with an AI program called Jina AI. Jina AI is an open-source, cloud native neural search framework.

What do you hope to get out of this experience?

I came to this internship hoping to gain work and practical experience in this environment. I also wanted to gain full stack development and machine learning (ML) experience. Octo has provided that through this internship by exposing me to computer systems applications and AI learning.

Who is an innovator you admire?

I admire Thomas Edison because he invented the light bulb that changed how we spend our nights and impacted us forever.

What is your impression of Octo?

My impression of Octo is that it’s a closely bonded work culture where employees are super friendly. We’ve had social activities with team members, and other ML team members are also very approachable.

What excites you about the future of ML/AI?

I am very excited for the future of ML/AI because of its ability to solve large scale problems through enhancing precision and effectiveness. I believe ML/AI can help solve large scale problems in health care and energy consumption. This technology can help health care researchers in the future by analyzing large existing record data, so it would prioritize research resources. AI can also help energy problems by determining server temperature and controlling when cooling is required.

What do you want to be working on in two years? In five?

In two to five years, I want to be able to develop a fully self-driving AI program. The average person spends 200 hours driving per year, so by developing this kind of AI program, people can spend more time on essential work or relaxation.
